Meteorologist Required

Speedwell is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team of meteorologists in our U.S. office. Candidates must have a degree in meteorology and experience working with meteorological data and forecasts. Eligible individuals must be hard working self-starters with experience in meteorological data processing, management, and data analysis.  Responsibilities focus upon developing and implementing data quality control programs for producing cleaned data and meteorological Settlement Data.  This position does not involve forecasting.

Potential candidates must be experienced with some of the following:

  • Basic database scripting

What you will do

  • prove our weather data downscaling methodologies (both statistical and dynamical methods)
  • Collaborate to the evolution of our technology platform and especially the design of the new data storage and cloud computing infrastructures
  • Plan and execute original research projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Clearly communicate your research findings through technical reports that are peer-reviewed
  • Write robust, testable and well-documented code
  • Develop scalable statistical algorithms, and apply these algorith

What you bring

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in applied mathematics, data science, computational fluid dynamics or an equivalent quantitative discipline
  • Familiarity with at least one compiled language (ideally FORTRAN and C)
  • Strong command of a statistical software environment such as R, MATLAB, or equivalent
  • Advanced experience with relational database (e.g., SQL, MySQL, NoSQL, etc.)
  • Proficiency in a Unix/Linux environment
  • Experience working with large real-world spatiotemporal data sets
  • Experience implementing algorithms on big data
  • Working proficiency in English

Job Description

Swiss Re is a market leader in the weather and Electricity Price and Outage (ELPRO) business.  Firms use these products to manage their exposure to weather and to commodity price risks created by unplanned outages, a common operational risk in the power industry.  In particular, Energy companies hedge demand uncertainty with weather products.

Because the business is growing, the EMEA/Asia Pacific origination team is adding resources to build from an existing base of European and Australian business.  We now have strong relationships in the products with the top European utilities and want to expand the business from there; in addition, the team manages a large amount of flow business from Australia.  Future business development initiatives are exploring China, Africa and other markets.

The European business has a strong base among Europe’s top utilities. Origination talent is needed to maintain that base and grow from there.  The candidate will:

  • maintain and enhance an existing book of business with leading energy companies in Europe, largely in the UK.
  • using those relationships as a platform, identify new transactions with those companies and further grow the business with new energy clients.
  • Align the product offering with local conditions as they evolve, both using existing products and creating new ones.
  • Represent the firm’s weather and outage business in the region, including responding as appropriate to interest where it emerges in the EMEA region.

Requirements

Management believes there is potential to increase the business by 50% over the next 3 – 5 years.

The position reports to the London-based head of Origination for EMEA/Asia Pacific.

University degree plus 5 – 10 years’ experience in relevant energy trading environment

Extensive contacts in the UK and European energy markets, and hands-on knowledge both of energy products and the weather product offering.

Proven sales skills, including a track record in developing new business and new clients

High-quality data analysis skills, including ability to assess and manage weather and commodity price data and analyse deal and product structures

Position Title: Assistant Director for Penn States Weather and Climate Risk Mitigation Program

Summary: The Department of Meteorology at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full time non-tenured faculty position focused on professional education in the area of Weather and Climate Risk Mitigation. This is a one-year, fixed-term position with excellent possibility of re-funding.

Rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. Requirements include a minimum of a Master’s degree in Meteorology, Environmental Science, or Business-related disciplines, with expertise in the mitigation of weather uncertainties in either the public or private sectors. We seek an individual with the ability to serve as Assistant Director for Penn State’s online professional education program in Weather and Climate Risk. The Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Weather and Climate Risk Mitigation is a new online program initiative of the Penn State Department of Meteorology, a recognized leader in meteorology education throughout the world. Following the highly successful online Certificate of Achievement in Weather Forecasting, the Meteorology Department is developing an international program of study for professionals who are faced with decisions involving risk from weather and/or climate impacts. This program is designed to address the emerging needs of numerous corporate and government sectors that are looking to minimize fiscal and political liabilities through the mitigation of risk while capitalizing on opportunities presented by the inherent uncertainties associated with weather and climate prediction.

As Assistant Director, you will be expected to provide program leadership, provide subject matter expertise in online course development, and teach online classes in risk analysis and mitigation. Opportunities for a successful applicant may include working with private and public sector partners on additional professional education projects. Experience in weather and climate risk analysis and mitigation across multiple sectors (energy, transportation, agriculture, logistics, etc.) is desired. A willingness to augment your existing knowledge with new case studies, approaches, etc., is a must. Teaching responsibilities will initially focus on topics such as: the science of risk and risk analysis in an environmental setting, the development of risk mitigation strategies, and communicating risk and mitigation strategies to decision-makers. However, future offerings in the applicant’s area of specialization or interest are anticipated. We are looking for someone who can work independently, as well as in a collaborative team-based environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills, are essential.

This position will be located at the University Park campus, within the John A. Dutton e-Education Institute, and will be appointed to the Department of Meteorology.
