The Weather Risk Management Association (WRMA) is delighted to invite undergraduate and graduate students from universities with current WRMA memberships to participate in the 2nd Annual Economics of Weather/Climate Conference.
WRMA (wrma.org) is dedicated to the education, standardization, and expansion of the acceptance of weather risk management products whether in the form of insurance, derivatives, or alternative risk transfer. The organization consists of a diverse group of hedgers (end-users from a variety of industry sectors), risk takers (primarily insurance/reinsurance companies), and atmospheric/oceanic science entities (public and private). Examples of underwritten risks include time integrated seasonal temperatures (e.g. utility energy volumes), annual wind forcing (wind farm output), seasonal/event-driven agricultural weather risks, hourly precipitation (e.g. outdoor events), quantos (weather and commodity), and tropical cyclones.
WRMA and its members recognize the paramount importance of rapidly evolving observational and prognostic atmospheric technologies to the future of weather risk management, and this conference is intended to strengthen the interaction/collaboration between risk providers, hedgers, and the research community.
We encourage students to submit abstracts on a wide range of topics pertaining to the intersection of atmospheric science and the economic continuum. Topics may include but are not limited to:
All accepted abstracts: All students with accepted abstracts will receive complimentary registration to the 20h Annual WRMA Meeting in Miami, Florida. Participation will be in the form of a poster session during the Annual Meeting Welcome Reception (June 6th). The poster session will provide a forum for students to interact and network with leaders in the weather risk management field, potentially creating new career opportunities.
Selected scholarship recipients: The WRMA Program Committee will provide four student scholarships. Scholarship recipients will receive a travel stipend (airfare within the continental US and hotel accommodations during the dates of the meeting) and the opportunity to present their research during a special conference session on June 7th.
DEADLINE EXTENDED Please submit your abstract by March 23, 2018 and ensure your associated university has renewed or applied for WRMA membership before submitting. Applicants will receive an acceptance decision email by no later than April 2, 2018.
